After successfully being chosen to support the governors of Primrose Hill Primary School  appoint a new headteacher, Candidate is Key set off immediately to design a process that would attract a highly experienced candidate capable of building innovatively on the many types of excellence already demonstrated by PHS, while articulating a strategic vision in a way that ensured for a sustainable and inspirational future.

Primrose Hill is a diverse, inclusive and confident two-form entry school situated in a spacious Victorian site alongside The Regent’s Canal and nestled between serene parks, London Zoo, and the cultural hub of Camden Town.

 

Primrose Hill is an exceptional place for learning, with talented staff delivering an imaginative and rigorous curriculum. The school's work is underpinned by a culture of combatting discrimination and promoting fairness, justice and equality, while respecting every child’s individual needs and talents. Their belief in laying a secure physical, social and emotional foundation, and instilling a genuine enthusiasm for learning, produces well-rounded children as well as fantastic academic results. Renowned for their high quality SEND provision, they have recently opened an Autistic Resourced Provision.

​Brief

Primrose Hill were seeking to appoint a Headteacher of extraordinary ability, capable of embracing their ethos and driving continuous improvement.  While the school was navigating the pandemic response well, the early success of the new headteacher would depend upon re-establishing a stable teaching and learning environment and ensuring that high standards are sustained.

PHS were looking for a dynamic leader who would share the school's vision of inclusivity combined with excellence, and an ability to consistently put principles into practice.  An outstanding, open-minded and outward-facing practitioner, whose knowledge of teaching and learning driven by evidence and keen to share and collaborate with others was pertinent.  As was the need to be a believer in distributive leadership, parental engagement and listening to children.  The successful candidate would join PHS with the support of dedicated staff, a committed governing body, and a close partnership with Camden Learning.

​Approach

After a consultation to draft an advert, review and update the job description and person specification and create a recruitment brochure, Candidate is Key began an Executive Search & Selection Campaign which ran for eight weeks with an advert that ran for four weeks.  After not being able to appoint on the first occasion, we continued the search and re-advertised, appointing on the second time of asking.

 

​Results

During the campaign we were proactive in contacting more than 150 candidates as either a source of information able to recommend suitable candidates or as a potential candidate having established this from our research.  We also managed interest from 23 potential applicants covering the two rounds.
